Hmmm. Do we really need that check? If mlocate is installed and don't have any index issue it is not really a problem.

On servers with lots of files (like backup servers) mlocate will index all the things and fill up /var It may go unnoticed as it's going on at night, especially on worktime monitored servers. Yet, can fill up /var, then fail & clean up

suggestion: if very big partition (>1To?), then verify mlocate is not installed

I suggest to always keep mlocate if installed. We should add ignore(s) in /etc/updatedb.conf, that's all.
